The village of Kájov is one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in the Czech Republic. It is located 4 km (2,5 miles) west of Český Krumlov. The village has a long and interesting history and is shrouded in countless legends and myths. The history of Kájov dates back to 1263 when the king Přemysl Otakar II granted the village to the Cistercian monastery in Zlatá Koruna. The local parish is an important historical landmark with the Pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary being the biggest attraction. It was built in the 13th century and quickly became an important pilgrimage site. The era of progress was disturbed in the beginning of the 15th century, when the church was pillaged by the Hussites. Luckily, the church recovered from the attack and quickly gained back its popularity. Weekly services are held there every Sunday and the main pilgrimage is held on the second Sunday in October.
